Rendlesham Forest: Britain's Roswell and the Tape Recording That Survived
Over three nights in December 1980, U.S. Air Force personnel at RAF Bentwaters encountered a landed craft in Rendlesham Forest. The deputy base commander narrated the final night on a tape recorder. That recording survived — and it is extraordinary.
Three Nights in December
The Rendlesham Forest incident is the most significant UAP case in British history and one of the most thoroughly documented military UAP encounters on record. It unfolded over three nights — December 26, 27, and 28, 1980 — in the forest between RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk, England. Both bases were operated by the U.S. Air Force and housed nuclear weapons.
What makes Rendlesham unique is not just the quality of the witnesses — senior U.S. Air Force officers — but the physical evidence, the official documentation, and above all, the audio recording made by Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt on the final night.
Night One: Penniston and Burroughs
In the early hours of December 26, security police Sergeant Jim Penniston and Airman John Burroughs were dispatched to investigate lights in the forest. What they found was not a crashed aircraft.
Penniston described a triangular craft, approximately nine feet across and six feet high, resting on the forest floor. Its surface was smooth and black, with no seams or rivets. Symbols were etched into the surface — geometric shapes that Penniston sketched in his notebook. He placed his hands on the craft and felt a static charge. He and Burroughs observed it for approximately 45 minutes before it rose silently and departed.
The landing site was examined the following day. Three depressions were found in the ground where the craft had rested. Radiation readings at the site were significantly elevated — a finding documented in official reports.
Night Three: The Halt Tape
The most extraordinary evidence from Rendlesham is an audio recording made by Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt, the deputy base commander, on the night of December 28. Halt led a team into the forest to investigate renewed activity and brought a handheld recorder to document what he found.
The recording — known as the Halt Tape — runs approximately 18 minutes. On it, Halt can be heard narrating in real time as his team observes a pulsing light moving through the trees, a bright object that sends beams of light down to the ground, and objects moving overhead. His voice is calm, professional, and clearly that of a senior military officer documenting what he is seeing.
"I see it too... it's back again... it's coming this way... there's no doubt about it, this is weird."
The tape was not intended for public release. It became public when it was leaked to a researcher in 1984. Its authenticity has never been seriously disputed.
The Official Documentation
Halt filed an official memorandum to the UK Ministry of Defence on January 13, 1981, describing the events of all three nights. The memo — known as the Halt Memo — is one of the most significant official UAP documents ever produced. It describes the craft, the landing traces, the radiation readings, and the aerial phenomena observed on the third night.
The UK Ministry of Defence investigated and concluded the events posed no threat to national security — a conclusion that satisfied almost no one who had read the Halt Memo carefully.
What the Witnesses Say Now
Penniston, Burroughs, and Halt have all maintained their accounts for over four decades. Penniston has elaborated on his experience, describing a binary code he believes was transmitted to him through the symbols on the craft. Burroughs has pursued a legal battle with the U.S. Air Force over health effects he attributes to radiation exposure during the encounter.
Halt has been the most publicly vocal, stating in a signed affidavit that he believes the objects were extraterrestrial and that both the U.S. and UK governments have covered up what happened in Rendlesham Forest.
