The Sighting
On the evening of January 8, 2008, residents of Stephenville, Texas — a small city about 70 miles southwest of Fort Worth — began reporting an extraordinary sight in the sky. Ricky Sorrells, a local machinist, had one of the closest encounters. He reported watching a flat, metallic object with no seams, no rivets, and no visible propulsion hovering over his property at low altitude. He observed it through a rifle scope and described it as enormous — larger than anything he had ever seen in the sky. The object returned to his property multiple times over the following weeks.
Steve Allen, a pilot and business owner, watched the object with two friends. He estimated it at about a mile long and half a mile wide, moving at approximately 3,000 mph — faster than any known conventional aircraft — and completely silent.
The Military Response
Within minutes of the initial sightings, witnesses reported seeing military jets — later identified as F-16s from Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth — pursuing the object. The jets were clearly visible; the object they were chasing was not making the same noise.
The military initially denied any aircraft were in the area that night. They later reversed this position, acknowledging that ten F-16s were conducting training operations in the area — but maintained they had not been scrambled in response to the UAP reports.
The MUFON Investigation
The Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) conducted one of its most thorough investigations of the Stephenville case. Investigators interviewed dozens of witnesses, collected physical evidence, and — most significantly — obtained FAA radar data through a Freedom of Information Act request.
The radar data was analyzed by Glen Schulze, a retired FAA air traffic control specialist, and Robert Powell, a research chemist and MUFON board member. Their analysis, published in a detailed report, confirmed that an unknown object had been tracked on FAA radar moving at extraordinary speeds over the Stephenville area on the night of January 8, 2008.
The Crawford Ranch Connection
The most startling finding in the radar analysis was the object's flight path. After moving over Stephenville, the unknown object turned and headed directly toward President George W. Bush's Crawford Ranch — located approximately 10 miles from Stephenville — before the radar track ended.
Crawford Ranch is a restricted airspace zone. Any aircraft approaching it without authorization would trigger an immediate military response. The radar data showed the unknown object heading directly for this restricted zone at high speed.
The implications were significant enough that the story received national media coverage, including a front-page story in the Dublin Courier-Gazette and coverage by CNN, Fox News, and the Associated Press.
The Official Non-Explanation
No official explanation was ever provided for the Stephenville sighting. The military's initial denial — followed by the acknowledgment of F-16s in the area — damaged its credibility with local witnesses. The FAA radar data, independently analyzed, confirmed that something real and unidentified was in the sky that night.
Ricky Sorrells, who had the closest and most repeated encounters, reported being visited by military personnel who warned him to stop talking publicly about what he had seen. He continued talking anyway.
